Rules (including gear)

Reading and adhering to these will help achieve a safe, fun, and fair event for all racers, as well as maintain our USSMA sanctioning

  1. Helmet, certified for ski or climb (or both): Worn at all times, both ascents & descents.

  2. Ascent: Stay on marked route (i.e, no routefinding, strategizing, etc.).  Skin up on removable climbing skins on skis (160cm min length men, 150cm women) with full metal edges and alpine touring bindings that free the heel for the ascent yet lock the heel for the descent.  Exception:  telemark & splitboard allowed in Shorter Recreational Course.  Prohibited:, SNS/NNN "bar" bindings, mountaineering/climbing boots, leather telemark boots, nordic ski boots, snowshoes.

  3. Descent: Stay on marked route.  On difficult terrain, be fair to racers passing you, i.e., no deliberate hindrance.  On easier terrain, stand up (i.e., no elbows-in-front-of-knees tuck) and stay within ski patrol enforcement speed.

  4. Right of Way: Public - not you - has right of way.  Yield to public traffic and be aware of skiers around you, especially where glades empty into trails and at the base.

  5. Self-Supported Race with No Gear Caching/Ditching:  Finish with all gear you started, e.g., cached food/water at transitions is clever yet is cheating. Ditto for ditched gear for post-race retrieval.  (But no need for avy rescue gear.)

  6. Skinning<>Skiing Transitions: Stop completely at transition zone before removing skins from skis, clothing, or pack.  Poles must be flat on snow.  Leave zone only once skins are either reaffixed to skis or stowed away (whether in pack or clothing) with both hands free to hold poles.

  7. No outside assistance, e.g., no food or water, no help w/ skins, etc. Exception: can replace broken ski(s) or pole(s).  And can ask q's/advice of anyone.                    Thanks for all your help Jonathan
